Peter Schneck 1943 - 2019

It is with enormous sadness that we share the news that Peter Schneck passed away on Saturday, 27 July 2019, following an accident while walking in his beloved mountains.

Peter was a very important person within IBBY for many years. He served as a member of the Hans Christian Andersen Award Jury (1990 and 1992) and later becoming the Jury President (1994 and 1996). He was elected to the IBBY Executive Committee from 1998 to 2002, serving as IBBY Vice President from 2000 to 2002. At the IBBY Jubilee Congress in Basel, Peter was elected IBBY International President and served from 2002 to 2006. He also joined the board of the IBBY Foundation and became its president in 2007. He was bestowed with Honorary Membership in 2012 at the IBBY Congress in London.

Peter’s commitment to IBBY was exceptional and continued throughout his life.  He was also a good friend. He will be warmly remembered, but sorely missed. Our deepest condolences go to his wife and his sons and their families.

Tomi Ungerer 1931- 2019

It was with great sadness that on Saturday morning we learned of the death of Tomi Ungerer on 8 February.  Ungerer received the 1998 Hans Christian Andersen Award for his illustrations.

“Ungerer is an artist of the unexpected: the surprise factor is essential to his books, and as an artist he has startled by constantly renewing himself, and by dealing with taboos and political correctness.” (The Hans Christian Andersen Awards, 1956-2002, by Eva Glistrup, 2002)

The message was posted by his family on Sunday:

Our condolences go to his family.
