IBBY WORKSHOPS-CREATING PICTURE BOOKS IN MINORITY LANGUAGES
Anne Pellowski, a former member of the Executive Committee of IBBY, and active for more than 50 years in the work of IBBY, offers as a free, voluntary service four workshops each year, in two areas of the world where there are few or no books for children in minority languages. In each case, two workshops are given in the same country or area during the same period. Generally, this includes one workshop in a metropolitan area and one workshop in a rural area in the same country.
Workshops are given in countries where IBBY has a National Section or individual members, and in countries where there has been little or no IBBY contact.
Each workshop usually lasts 2-3 days. The books are made in cloth, but the most successful ones can easily be transferred to print format.
The sponsoring group is responsible for finding locales for the workshops, and for assembling the appropriate participants. These are usually kindergarten or early childhood teachers, crèche and day care workers, persons interested in writing and/or illustrating children’s books, teacher-trainers, and others who work with young children.
All materials for the workshops are brought by Ms. Pellowski and she takes care of her travel costs for herself. Sometimes, Ms. Pellowski is accompanied by other persons affiliated with IBBY; they also pay for their own travel costs.
