History

The Brazilian Section of IBBY - Fundação Nacional do Livro Infantil e Juvenil – FNLIJ created on May 23, 1968, is a private non-profit organization.

From 1974 to 2019, for 45 consecutive years, FNLIJ participated in the Bologna Book Fair as IBBY Brazil, with booth, exhibition, and FNLIJ's selection catalogue of Brazilian writers, illustrators and publishers being responsible for the presence of Brazil as a guest country twice. In 1995, FNLIJ organized the exhibition "A Bright Blend of Colours" and in 2014 the exhibition "Countless Threads, Countless Tales".

The FNLIJ Award has been organized since 1975 and is given to the best books for children and young people published in Brazil in 18 categories. The jury, presently with 24 members, represent twelve states in the five Brazilian regions. For more information, please see more here and here.

The 14th IBBY International Congress was held in Rio de Janeiro in 1974, supported by FNLIJ – its motto was "The book as an instrument in the formation and development of the child". It was the first IBBY Congress to be held outside Europe.

Noticias was FNLIJ’s monthly newsletter published from January 1986 to July 2018. In 2013, FNLIJ published “The Art of Book Illustration for Children and Young People in Brazil”.

Although with limited presence in social media, FNLIJ keeps active communication on Facebook and Instagram.

The most important current projects are:
