IBBY-Yamada 2022: Peru
The Trust Libraries - developing a book culture in a context of crisis
The Trust Libraries Network is a project that began in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. Miss Josefina Jimenez installed a fruit box filled with books from her own library in front of her house in Lima and invited residents of her neighbourhood to borrow the books. This original idea has spread to other neighbourhoods and the Trust Library Network now has 40 reading points nationwide. Simple libraries have been created in popular diners in three vulnerable communities in Lima (Villa El Salvador, Manchay and San Juan de Miraflores) and in downtown Ica. IBBY Peru improved the simple libraries to create appropriate and comfortable reading spaces including providing adequate collections and reading materials and provide educational resources to the staff in charge of the libraries (parents and community leaders) as well as organise reading activities for the children and their families.
