IBBY Children in Crisis: Afghanistan

Between 15 and 20 May 2009 IBBY organized a meeting to discuss the possibilities of encouraging reading and quality publishing in Afghanistan and Tajikistan.  The meeting was held in Biga in the Çannakale province of Turkey.

IBBY President Patsy Aldana led the meeting under the main title Children's Books: Bridges between Nations.  Twenty-six participants attended from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.  The topics included research in Iran, current publishing activities in Afghanistan and Tajikistan, reading promotion in Pakistan, the role of librarians, different approaches to the development of quality publications, and the development of school libraries.
